WHAT TO DO WHEN THE MONITOR BEEPS
- Count the beeps and go look at your child.
- Without touching baby, check for a color change. Turn on a light if
you need to.
- If you see a color change don't wait - this is a real alarm.
Do mild stimulation - touch baby gently, say their name.
If beeping continues
Do moderate stimulation - shake the baby gently, call their name louder.
If beeping continues
Do vigorous stimulation - pick up baby, supporting the head.
Shake gently. This is the "shake and shout" for CPR.
If beeping continues
Call for help
Position the airway
Look, listen, and feel for breathing
Do CPR until help arrives, or baby responds.
- If you check baby and see no change of color, then wait - this
may be a false alarm.
Watch baby. Do not touch. Look for signs of breathing. Keep counting.
- If after 10 seconds, (or 10 beeps) baby still looks nice and pink,
gently touch baby. The beeping should stop.
- If you see baby change color while you are counting, immediately
go to step 3.
- If beeping stops before 10 beeps proceed to step 5.
- Log all alarms on log sheets.
Note any significant occurrences in baby's day.
Note the time of the last feeding.
Note any medications given the day of the alarm.
Jot down anything that will help you remember that alarm, and relay
what happened to the Cherub Medical clinician and your doctor.
